Eye Injuries in Dogs & Cats

Protecting Vision & Spotting Painful Symptoms

The eyes are extremely delicate organ systems. Scratches from cat fights, plant material, foreign bodies, or chemical splashes can cause corneal ulcers and severe internal inflammation that can result in permanent vision loss if left untreated.

Key Warning Signs & Red Flags

  • Squinting, holding the eye shut, or frequent pawing at the face
  • Cloudy, bluish, or hazy appearance over the cornea
  • Excessive tearing, yellow/green discharge, or blood in the eye
  • Bulging or abnormal pupil size

Immediate First Aid & Action Protocol

  • Fit an Elizabethan collar (cone) if available to stop your pet from rubbing the eye.
  • If exposed to household chemicals, flush gently with clean saline solution.
  • DO NOT attempt to remove embedded foreign objects yourself.
  • Call Snowy Vets on (02) 6455 7800 for prompt veterinary ophthalmic examination.

Prevention & Owner Guidance

Avoid letting dogs ride with their heads hanging out car windows and trim low-hanging thorny vegetation in the garden.
