Large Wounds & Bite Injuries in Pets

Infection Risks and Bleeding Control

Lacerations, tear wounds, and animal bite punctures often look small on the surface while causing extensive tissue crushing and pocketing underneath. Untreated wounds rapidly develop severe bacterial infections and abscesses.

Key Warning Signs & Red Flags

  • Active, pulsing, or continuous bleeding
  • Gaping skin cuts, exposed underlying tissue, or puncture marks
  • Swelling, heat, pain, or foul-smelling discharge
  • Lethargy or fever

Immediate First Aid & Action Protocol

  • Apply continuous firm pressure with a clean cloth or sterile dressing.
  • Keep wounds covered loosely during transport.
  • DO NOT apply human ointments, hydrogen peroxide, or harsh disinfectants.
