Urinary Obstruction in Male Cats & Dogs

Recognizing a Life-Threatening Blockage

Urinary obstruction occurs when the urethra becomes blocked by inflammatory plugs, crystals, urinary stones, or strictures. It is particularly common in male cats due to their narrow urethra. As urine builds up, dangerous potassium levels accumulate in the bloodstream, threatening heart failure.

Key Warning Signs & Red Flags

  • Frequent trips to the litter box or lawn with repeated straining and little to no urine produced
  • Crying, howling, or showing extreme pain while trying to urinate
  • Excessive licking of the genital area
  • Lethargy, loss of appetite, vomiting, or a painful, firm abdomen

Immediate First Aid & Action Protocol

  • Treat any inability to urinate as an immediate emergency—do not wait overnight.
  • Contact Snowy Vets on (02) 6455 7800 and bring your pet in right away.
  • DO NOT press or squeeze your pet’s abdomen.
  • DO NOT give human pain relief or attempt home remedies.

Prevention & Owner Guidance

Promote hydration with wet food and water fountains, maintain clean litter trays, manage stress in cats, and feed veterinary-recommended urinary care diets if prescribed.
